CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The former executive director of the Corner Brook Downtown Business Association is back in custody and facing three new charges.
It’s alleged that Nicole McKinnon, 31, breached the conditions of a court order and committed two thefts. One theft is alleged to have occurred on July 14 at Dominion and the other allegation involves the property of an individual on July 23.
The new charges mean McKinnon is now facing a total of 23.
Among those are 15 charges that allege she defrauded the Downtown Business Association of nearly $64,000 between April and October, 2018.
She’s also charged with break, enter and theft from the Downtown Business Association office, possession of stolen property, a single count of fraud against an individual and fraudulent use of a personal credit card.
During an appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on Wednesday morning, July 31, the Crown told the court it was opposed to McKinnon’s release.
Legal aid lawyer Courtney Mills said she was unable to receive clear instructions from McKinnon and the matter was set to the afternoon for a bail hearing.
McKinnon was visibly upset when the matter was called and Mills asked for the bail hearing to be put over to Friday to allow time for her to put together a possible release plan.
The original 19 charges that McKinnon is facing were first called in the court on July 25 and set over to Aug. 20. All the charges will now be brought forward on Friday.
The Downtown Business Association suspended operations late last November and said it had notified the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The RNC’s investigation led to the charges being filed against McKinnon.
