MOUNT PEARL, N.L. — A quick-thinking neighbour may have averted a tragedy when the house across the street from his own was firebombed at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in Mount Pearl.

The man called 911, ran across the street and hosed down the flames with a garden hose.

St. John’s Regional Fire Department platoon chief Dean Foley told the Telegram firefighters found smoke in the area of the front porch of the home but the fire had been knocked down by the neighbour before they arrived. He added that it appeared some type of incendiary device had been used in the incident.

Firefighters weren’t sure at first if the fire originated inside or outside the home so they forced entry and evacuated the two residents of the home, a mother and son.

Damage was confined to the front porch of the home and neither resident was injured.

The RNC was also on scene investigating the blaze.
