One man is in custody following a New Year's morning multiple hit-and-run in which a vehicle struck a pedestrian and a taxi, crashed into a tree and damaged a parked car.

Witnesses told the Telegram the driver then fled the scene on foot.

The incident unfolded just before 2 a.m. when a young woman was apparently struck by an erratically driven vehicle near the top of St. Clare Avenue. The SUV then continued down the road and sideswiped a taxi that was approaching in the opposite direction. Both the taxi driver and the male passenger said the SUV was swerving down the road before the taxi was struck.

The driver of the SUV then lost control of the vehicle, slid across a nearby front lawn and crashed into a tree, showering a parked car with debris. The male taxi passenger told the Telegram that he was going to chase down the suspect driver but he had fled before he could apprehend him. An RNC K-9 unit arrived shortly after the incident and the suspect was apprehended a short distance from the collision scene.

Neither the taxi driver, nor the male and female passenger, suffered any serious injuries and the injuries to the female pedestrian were not thought to be serious.

The SUV suffered extensive damage while the taxi and parked car were moderately damaged.

The RNC is investigating the incidents.
