ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Memorial University announced Thursday it's extending the current winter semester.
In a news release, the post-secondary institution said it is moving the end date from Friday, April 3 to Thursday, April 9. The student study break between the end of classes and the start of exams has been reduced from four days to three. The exam period will be April 13-21, with the official release of grades moved from April 23 to April 25.
The release said the week-long winter break will remain as is, though MUN noted this is subject to change depending on whether more instructional time is impacted by closures during the semester. These changes do not impact Grenfell Campus, the Western Regional School of Nursing or Harlow, nor do they impact the Marine Institute diploma, certificate or industrial training programs. The Marine Institute will make a further announcement about those programs, the release stated.
“We recognize these changes may pose issues for students and we will work to minimize those impacts for successful completion of the winter semester,” Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic), said in the release. “Keeping our students and employees safe is our first priority, along with finding the right balance to preserve the academic integrity of the semester and the hard work students have already committed to their studies.”
So far, seven teaching days have been lost in the St. John's metro area because of storms. The state of emergency in St. John's linked to last Friday's blizzard is expected to end at 6 a.m. Saturday, pending a further announcement from the city on Friday.
The university announced Wednesday all facilities in the St. John's metro area would remain closed through to this Friday. The deadline to add courses or drop them while still receiving a full refund has also been extended to the day after classes resume.
