ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Help is on the way for plant workers negatively impacted by the slumping fishing sector.
The provincial government has made $2.5 million available through the Labour Market Development Agreement.
That’s in addition to $500,000 for other supports available under the Integrated Transition Framework for Displaced Plant Workers.

“When communities in our province are impacted by an industry downturn, our government is there to help,” Fisheries and Land Resources Minister Gerry Byrne said in a release today, July 4.
“We have programs and services across multiple departments designed to support displaced workers in finding new employment and support to retrain or upgrade skills. It is important to support the workers who are affected in our fishing sector and ensure we have a skilled workforce available when it rebounds.”
The release indicated the provincial government will be reaching out to impacted companies, communities and residents with information on the support available and to determine if they are eligible for assistance.
“Our government is working hard to create short-term employment opportunities for affected employees,” Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons said.
