Chief Medical Officer Dr. Janice announced a second new case of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador Wednesday. The person is a female under the age of 20, and is a close contact of a man who tested positive in Central Health. The latter case, announced Tuesday, was related to travel outside the province.

All close contacts of the man have been advised to self-isolate.

Fitzgerald said young people under the age of 40 have been the main demographic of an increase of cases across Canada this week compared to last week. She said the jump in numbers has been attributed to an increase in social gatherings.

“We must be kind to each other in word and in action."

She pleaded with residents not to let their guard down now that the weather is warmer and pandemic measures have been relaxed.

Fitzgerald also repeated a request for tolerance of those who contract the illness.

“We must be kind to each other in word and in action,” she said

“Testing positive for illness can be scary for any person or their family. COVID-19 is no different.”
