Newfoundland Power has issued an alert about ongoing text scams targeting customers.
“Text Scam Alert: Please be aware that we have received reports of an ongoing text scam. If you receive a text that asks you to click a link to receive an electronic funds transfer, this is not legitimate. Do not click the link!” NL Power tweeted Friday.
Going into more detail on its website, the utility company said customers should be wary when answering telephone calls or replying to texts or emails that offer products, services or even payments the customer is not expecting.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is also warning it has received complaints from customers regarding electronic money transfers.
“These texts are not from Hydro, and we do not send e-transfers like this,” Hydro said on its website.

Newfoundland Power warned customers to never give out personal or financial information and never click a link in a text or email unless they know it has originated from a trusted source.
Sometimes, said Newfoundland Power, third parties conduct customer surveys, but if it does call about an account, it would never ask for account information.
If you suspect that you have been the target of a telephone, text or email scam, report it to the RNC or RCMP in your area, the Better Business Bureau or PhoneBusters at 1-888-495-8501.
