St. John’s Coun. Sheilagh O’Leary pressed Joyce on the matter at Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador’s (MNL) Municipal Symposium in Gander earlier today.

In 2015, MNL passed a resolution for a complete ban on single-use plastic bags in the province. The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador has also supported a ban.

O’Leary said the resolution continues to be met with “overwhelming support,” and asked, “When we can expect some sort of response on this?”

While Joyce agreed with the concerns surrounding plastic bags, he said it is something that requires time.

“We are hoping to start that in the very near future, but do I have a timeline of when that will be done and completed? No. But I can tell you we are working on it, gathering information as we speak.”
