A 17-year-old novice driver was charged Thursday afternoon under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding more than 51 km/h above the posted speed limit just west of Gander.

The RCMP states that, at approximately 1:45 p.m., RCMP Traffic Services Central conducted radar enforcement on the Trans-Canada Highway and noted a vehicle travelling at an extremely high rate of speed in the posted 100 km/h speed zone.

Radar readings came in at 182 km/h.

When the RCMP pulled the vehicle over the male driver’s licence was seized and the vehicle impounded.

RCMP NL reminds drivers to obey the posted speed limit. Consequences for a first offence of excessive speeding include a fine of $520, on-the-spot three-day impoundment of a vehicle and a suspension of a person's driver’s licence.
