UPDATED FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY-MORNING NEWS RELEASE FROM ROYAL NEWFOUNDLAND CONSTABULARY

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a 58-year-old man from St. John’s died in Tuesday’s single-vehicle accident on Pitts Memorial Drive.

The RNC says the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was the passenger in an SUV that left the road and rolled over onto its roof into an embankment that forms part of the meridian between the overpasses at the Ruby Line Exit leading into the Southlands neighbourhood.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with what have been described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

RNC accident investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with dash-camera footage of the area of Pitts Memorial Drive at the Ruby Line exit at the time of the collision, which happened around 2:30 p.m., to contact them at 729-8000 or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also provide information anonymously on the province’s Crime Stoppers website (ww.nlcrimestoppers.com).

• One man is dead and another man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a single-vehicle rollover on Pitts Memorial Drive in St. John’s Tuesday afternoon.

The incident, which happened at the overpasses for Southlands Boulevard, left the SUV upside-down on an embankment between the overpasses.

When the Telegram arrived on the scene, one male was being treated by paramedics as he sat near the overturned vehicle. He was later placed on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

First responders and rescue personnel then secured the SUV as it sat precariously on the steep hill.

No information was available as to what caused the accident. Both directions of Pitts Memorial Drive in the area were closed to facilitate the investigation and traffic was diverted down the ramps.


• Rescue personnel and emergency first responders are at the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident at Pitts Memorial Drive and Southlands Boulevard in St. John's.

A single vehicle appears to have flipped over landing in the area between the two overpass lanes of the highway.

At least one person taken to hospital. 

Traffic flow has been shut down in the area and motorists should use an alternative route.
