An Ontario-based manufacturer of personal protective equipment is donating 7,200 face shields to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Education for use by teachers for their return to classrooms next week.
The Canadian Shield of Waterloo, Ont., is making similar donations to other provincial education ministries in what it says "is a direct way to give back to school boards and organizations across Canada" that showed support when the company first launched in March.
In the past six months, the company has grown from 10 employees to over 300 and secured a contract with the federal government to manufacture 10 million face shields for front-line and essential workers. The Canadian Shield also makes cloth and surgical masks, as well as face shields designed for children,
In all, the company plans to ship 750,000 face shields — at a total retail value of $7,5 million — for distribution to registered teachers in the country.
The Canadian-made shields are made of 100 per cent recyclable material and can be sanitized and reused up to 15 times.
