ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Drivers across the province could be checked during the Thanksgiving weekend to ensure they are abiding by the law.
Operation Impact, a co-ordinated traffic initiative by police agencies across the country to increase public compliance with safe-driving practices — through zero-tolerance enforcement and education — will take place Oct. 11-15.
A news release notes the goals of the initiative are to save lives, reduce injuries and promote harm reduction by targeting impaired driving (alcohol/drug), distracted driving (cellphone use and texting), seatbelt use and aggressive driving.
The heightened enforcement effort will occur over the holiday weekend, when traffic volume is expected to increase.
Operation Impact is also designed to remind drivers to consciously consider road safety whenever they operate a motor vehicle — to ensure all passengers are properly seat-belted in their vehicle, to refrain from impaired driving, to pay attention to the road at all times and to refrain from aggressive driving.
RCMP members from traffic services and detachments throughout the province will conduct checkpoints and enforcement activities over the holiday weekend.
