PARADISE, N.L. — A church in Paradise is hoping people can spare more than a square to help out The Gathering Place.

Holy Innocents’ Anglican Church has announced the fundraiser “We are on a roll.”

It seeks toilet paper, as well as new men’s and women’s undergarments and pajamas, for clients of The Gathering Place, which serves thousands of low-income people in need.

Rev. Byron Barter said the church had successful efforts this past year to collect items like toiletries, which came in from as far away as St. Anthony. About 80 per cent of the donors were from outside the congregation, he said.

“We’ve collected many different things, but this would be a first,'' he said of the toilet paper drive.

He said the church consulted with The Gathering Place, which is located in St. John’s, to see what was most in need.

The drive is part of the Lent season outreach and ends April 4.

Barter said the plan is to store the donations in an empty classroom before transporting them to The Gathering Place.

“I don’t anticipate we’ll need a warehouse. But you don’t know,” he said.

The Gathering Place acting executive director Kim Grant said the items being collected by the church are always in high demand and will help meet the needs of their guests.

"We are very grateful that Holy Innocents Anglican Parish has chosen to support The Gathering Place in this way," she said.

Holy Innocents is located at 297 Paradise Rd., Paradise, and the website is here.
