Cindy and Albert Courtney of Paradise are the latest couple from Newfoundland and Labrador to win the Set for Life top prize.

“I picked up a Set for Life ticket Friday night and there was one other ticket left in the tray, off in the corner by itself,” Albert said in a news release from Atlantic Lottery. “I told the clerk I would take that one, too.”

The second ticket was a winner.

“We were having a feed of fish and chips on Saturday when Albert remembered the tickets he bought Friday night and he decided to scratch them,” Cindy said. “He started to scream ‘I got it! I got it!’”

What Albert and Cindy had were three Set for Life symbols and it meant they won the ticket’s top prize.

The top prize for Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life Scratch’N Win ticket is one of two options; $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Cindy and Albert will receive the lump sum.

The couple’s wish list includes home ownership, looking after their only child, and a trip to Jamaica.

“We purchased a new home four years ago, and now we can pay off the mortgage,” Cindy said. “That feels awesome.”

“We have one son and a daughter-in-law and we will share with them and get them off to a great start financially,” Albert said.

Albert was recently laid off from a painting and plaster job he had and was looking for work, the lottery corporation said. The same day he claimed his prize he was hired by a new company. He says the time in between jobs in his field of work used to be very stressful.

“The money will make it a lot easier now when I am in between projects. It takes a lot of pressure off,” Albert said.

Tucker’s Convenience on Empire Avenue in St. John’s sold the winning ticket and will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.

This win marks the fourth Set for Life top prize awarded in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2018.
