ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Motorists who don’t comply with parking regulations in St. John’s will be handed stiffer fines this year.
The increases are part of the city’s 2021 budget, and took effect last Friday at 2 p.m. Amendments to several city bylaws were required before the increases could come into effect.
A pay-by-phone or pay station parking violation, which cost $30 last year, will now fetch people a $50 bill.
Violators of the city’s parking ban under the snowclearing bylaw will be ticketed $75 — up $20 from 2020.
Street-cleaning violations rose from $30 to $40.
All parking offences for which the fine was $50 have increased to $60, while all parking offences for which the fine was $60 have increased to $75.
At Monday’s weekly city council meeting, Coun. Sandy Hickman, newly-appointed head of the public works committee, said snow is expected later this week and reminded residents that there is an overnight parking ban in place.
He said the city may consider imposing a 24-hour ban, depending on how much snow falls, and residents should check the city’s website (stjohns.ca/snow) for updates on winter parking restrictions.
