A quiet residential road in Paradise was the scene of a dramatic collision Tuesday night when a pickup apparently struck a pole at high speed on Three Island Pond Road, cracking it off as the truck overturned into the street.
The utility pole was completely broken about a meter above ground with the upper part of the pole left hanging in midair only by the electrical and communications wires attached to it. A damaged and leaking transformer had been torn from the pole and lay on the road, wires still attached.
A male occupant of the truck was seen speaking to RNC officers as he sat on the back of a St. John’s Regional fire truck and was briefly questioned by police in the back of a police cruiser. It appears the man escaped any serious injuries during the incident but he was checked by paramedics on scene. The Telegram was unable to confirm if the man was the driver of the overturned truck.
An RNC K-9 team was also spotted searching the area but it was unclear as to why they had been called to the scene.
The road was closed in the area until Newfoundland Power workers repaired the damage.
The RNC is investigating the incident.
