High winds sent snow swirling over the weekend, but luckily there was little impact on the motoring public in the Corner Brook area.
A spokesman for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was happy to report there were only two minor accidents in the city on Remembrance Day.
One accident occurred around 12 noon at the intersection of Broadway and Lewin Parkway involving a car rear-ending another vehicle at the stop sign, but weather wasn’t a factor, according to police.
The other incident involved a three-vehicle collision near the bottom of Elizabeth Street. Police say one vehicle stopped for a vehicle in front of him that was turning left. The second vehicle stopped behind the first vehicle and then the third vehicle was following too closely and hit vehicle No. 2 who pushed it into No. 1.
Police, later in the day, issued summary offence tickets for various offences to a male driver after operational patrol officers conducted a traffic safety stop on a vehicle. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the vehicle was unregistered, ownership hadn’t been transferred and it was being operated without a valid insurance policy being in place. Because of this, the vehicle was impounded and charges were laid against the driver.
With temperatures dropping and snow starting to fly, it’s a time for the motoring public to adjust their driving habits to ensure they keep safety in mind at all times, the RNC said.
The following is a list of some things police say motorists should keep in mind now that winter has arrived and driving can change without warning:
• Snow means slow, so all drivers are encouraged to reduce speed limits.
• Allow more leeway time in the morning for travelling to work or school.
• Give yourself more stopping distance between other vehicles, depending on the road conditions.
• Make sure tires and wipers are in great condition for winter driving.
• Make sure windows are clear of all snow and well defrosted before you begin your journey.
• Be on the lookout for pedestrians, because the days are getting shorter and there are more hours of darkness.
• Adjust driving habits to the conditions of the road at all times.
