ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — St. John’s city council will vote on Monday whether or not to approve a lounge at the Cineplex movie theatre in the Avalon Mall.

A discretionary use application was submitted by Cineplex in December requesting permission to operate the lounge.

City staff are recommending council approve the application.

If approved, the lounge would be in “the existing cinema area,” reads the application, and will operate during regularly scheduled movie times (starting 11:30 a.m. on weekdays, 10:30 a.m. on weekends, ending 15 minutes after the last posted movie of the day.)

The application states that the sale and consumption of alcohol will strictly follow all provincial laws and regulations.

The city received two written submissions in response to the posted notices on the city’s website and in The Telegram.

Both submissions were against the proposal.

One submission expressed concerns about underage drinking, and turning a family-friendly activity into another place to drink alcohol.

The second submission noted there is already alcohol sold at The Rec Room adjacent to the cinemas.

“It’s nice to keep some public spaces alcohol free for families and also for people who struggle with alcohol addiction,” reads a part of the submission.

The Telegram contacted Cineplex for further details about the lounge proposal, but calls and emails were not returned by press deadline.
