Accused murderer Craig Pope will stand trial before a jury next June.

Pope, 32, was arraigned in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John’s Friday morning, where he pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder of David (Jonathan) Collins, 36, last fall.

His trial will begin June 3 and is scheduled to last for a month.

Pope is alleged to have fatally stabbed Collins on the street in the Alderberry Lane/Mundy Pond Road area of the city on Sept. 7, 2017. Police were called to the scene and found Collins unconscious. He was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries.

Police and some witnesses say the man who stabbed Collins left the area in a taxi. Pope was arrested a short time later on Elizabeth Avenue and has been in custody ever since.

Police say the two men knew each other.
