A jury is set to begin hearing evidence Tuesday in the murder trial of Allan Potter.
The 14 jury members and two alternates were chosen at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court Monday from about 350 people summoned for jury duty.
While it took the entire morning for the court to deal with those who had requested exemptions — for reasons ranging from pre-scheduled medical appointments to connections with witnesses expected to testify — the selection process, once it got underway, took only about an hour.
Potter, 55, sat in the dock taking notes as the selection process took place. He is represented by lawyers Randy Piercey and Jon Noonan, while the prosecutors are Erin Matthews and Sheldon Steeves.
Justice Garrett Handrigan is presiding over the trial.
Potter is charged with murdering Dale Porter, who was found stabbed on his North River Property in June 2014. The father of two later died in hospital.
A second man has also been charged with Porter’s murder, and will go to trial at a later date. His name has been banned from publication while Potter’s trial is ongoing.
Potter’s trial is expected to last five weeks. The Crown is expected to call about two dozen witnesses to testify, including police officers from this province and Ontario, doctors, paramedics and others.
