The money, which comes from both the provincial and federal governments, will be used in the second phase of the transmission main replacement project at Portugal Cove Road. The province is spending $2,918,387 on the project, according to a news release from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment, while the federal government will contribute “up to $2,652,573.” The City of St. John’s will cover the rest of the bill, which is expected to be $8,776,146 in total.

The project includes the replacedment of the water main between New Cove Road and First Avenue, as well as installing an underground pressure-reducing station at Portugal Cove Road and New Cove Road. The work is expected to reduce traffic disruptions and service outages caused by water main breaks in the area.

St. John’s Mayor Dennis O’Keefe said the city has committed more than $3 million toward installing two new water mains for the water supply.

“These upgrades will benefit residents and create new employment opportunities for the local economy. I thank our federal and provincial government partners for their financial support,” he said in a news release.
