The Department of Health issued a statement Friday evening saying there are no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Rumours have been circulating in the province today about a child testing positive for COVID-19," the statement said. "This is false."

No other details were available.

"People are encouraged to stay informed and rely on trusted sources of information like the provincial government's COVID-19 website," the statement continued. "People are also reminded to be responsible when it comes to social media activity."

On Wednesday, officials announced that daily news releases would no longer be issued unless a new case is confirmed.

Pandemic numbers are still updated daily at www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19.
