Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will be waking up to a New Year and new fuel prices on Jan. 1.

Reflecting tax changes brought on by the province’s new carbon tax plan — the four-cent temporary gas tax has been eliminated and replaced with a federally-mandated 4.42-cent carbon tax — the Public Utilities Board (PUB) has increased the maximum price per litre of automotive fuel by .4 cents in all areas of the province except the Connaigre Peninsula and Coastal Labrador South where it climbs slightly more at .5 cents per litre (cpl).

Both those areas also see a .4 cent increase in diesel fuel, whereas all other areas are getting a cut of 1.8 cpl. Another reflection of the tax changes, with the five-cent additional gas tax on diesel eliminated and replaced with a federally-mandated 5.37-cent carbon tax.

What that means at the pump is that the new max price for a litre of self-service gas in St. John’s and the Avalon Peninsula is $1.12 as of Tuesday morning. A litre of diesel will cost you $1.29.

Furnace oil and stove oil are dropping by 1.85 and 2.06 cpl respectively. The price of propane is standing pat.

The next update comes in two days time on Jan. 3.

The province released its federally-approved plan on Oct. 23 to be ready for Ottawa's Jan. 1 implementation deadline.
