A 24-year-old St. Philip’s man is facing charges for possession of contraband tobacco after a traffic stop Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Around 8:30 a.m., acting on information received from the public, RCMP from Channel-Port aux Basques and the Bay St. George detachments, as well as the RCMP General Investigation Section based out of Stephenville, conducted a traffic stop of pickup truck on the Trans-Canada Highway near South Branch.
RCMP discovered and seized a large quantity of contraband tobacco products from the vehicle, including nearly 90,000 cigarettes.
The driver was arrested.
He has since been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Charges of possession of unstamped tobacco products under the federal Excise Act and provincial Revenue and Administration Act are pending.
