RCMP's Operation Impact results in 642 charges in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Newfoundland and Labrador says it checked close to 2,600 vehicles and laid a total of 642 charges following Operation Impact over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Officers conducted patrols on the province’s highways and in communities aimed at the detection of impaired drivers, aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, intersection violations, seatbelt non-compliance as well as other Highway Traffic Act/Criminal Code violations.

The breakdown of charges is as follows:

  • Impaired by Alcohol - 4
  • Impaired by Drug - 0
  • Speeding / Aggressive driving - 478   
  • Seat Belts - 12
  • Other Provincial Stats - 114
  • Cell Phone use / Distracted Driving - 11
  • Fail to Yield - 2
  • Careless Driving (Provincial) - 1
  • Prohibited Driving (Criminal Code) - 1
  • Provincial Cannabis Act - 4
  • Insurance violations - 13
  • Unsafe Lane change - 2

Police also seized and impounded 17 vehicles, issued two roadside suspensions for drugs, performed 15 roadside screening tests and conducted three standardized field sobriety tests.
