ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — They’ve broken up the old gang, at least when it comes to the provincial government’s COVID-19s update sessions.
Outgoing Premier Dwight Ball made his last appearance at the weekly update last Wednesday, but Ball's successor, Andrew Furey did not participate in today’s briefing.
the update came less than two days after Furey, who is a doctor (he is an orthopedic surgeon), took over as the leader of the provincial Liberal Party, putting him in line to become the province’s 14th premier as soon as he is sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote.
Dr. John Haggie, who flew solo at today's session, said Furey is still being briefed in preparation for when he officially takes over the premier's office
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, the province’s Chief Medical Health Officer, did not take part in this afternoon’s briefing. She is occupied with the province's response to a court challenge of its COVID-19 travel restrictions. That case began Tuesday in St. John's.
Ball, Fitzgerald and Haggie had become a familiar triumvirate during the COVID-19 updates, which were held daily at the height of the pandemic locally, but were eventually reduced in frequency.
