Respected local businessman dead after lengthy illness

A prominent Newfoundland businessman has died.

Tom Hickman founded the Marco Group of Companies in 1970 after working in the construction industry for many years. 

He was born to Chester and Jane Hickman in Grand Bank on May 10, 1941 and left home at  just 15 to work in the construction industry. 

In 1966, he met his wife Margaret while she was working as a nurse in Bay d'Espoir and after a brief courtship they married eight months later. 

Although known locally for his professional success, an online obituary says that Hickman was most proud of his family. 

Hickman leaves his wife, son and two daughters, as well as a two grandsons. He died after a lengthy illness. 

Visitation will take place at Carnell's Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road in St. John’s on Sunday, December 13 and Monday, December 14 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
