St. John's — A police officer was taken into custody Monday after he reportedly violated court orders to stay away from a woman.
RNC Const. Steve Curnew appeared in provincial court in St. John’s today, charged with a single count of breaching an emergency protection order. Curnew was released on a $1,000 surety.
The 43-year-old is due back in court Sept. 6.
It's not known who the woman is or how Curnew knows her.
The RNC is expected to speak on the case later this day.
UPDATE:
The RNC said Tuesday that it received information about Curnew just after 4 p.m. Monday. As a result of that investigation, supervisors with RNC’s operational patrol services division located and arrested him just before 5 p.m. without incident.
RNC Chief Joe Boland said details of the EPO are private and police will not be providing information on the alleged breach, except to say there was no violence in the incident.
Curnew was not on duty at the time of this alleged EPO breach and is currently non-operational and on leave, Boland said.
He went on to say that because this was a breach of the Family Violence and Protection Act, there have been no criminal charges laid. To protect the privacy of those involved in the case, he said, police will be releasing no further information about it.
