CLARENVILLE, NL – After allegations of hazing involving a sports team at Clarenville High School, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) says discussions have been held, police were notified, and an investigation is continuing.

In a statement provided to the Packet, the NLESD says Clarenville High’s administrative team has been working with student athletes to address the situation. Hazing violates the school’s athletic policy, behaviour expectation matrix and the provincial Safe and Caring Schools policy.

In addition to working with the students themselves, NLESD says the school has held discussions with teacher sponsors and coaches about expectations of appropriate conduct.

The police are also involved and, according to NLESD, their investigation is ongoing.

“The RCMP have been informed of the matter, as hazing can be a criminal activity,” said the statement.

“The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has been providing support (to police) as requested.”
