CARBONEAR, NL — A seal caught some attention from residents of Carbonear when he found himself near a local wharf.
The seal spent some time lounging on the gravel near a wharf just off of Water Street in Carbonear Friday afternoon, Feb. 16.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans website advises residents to not interact with seals when found on shore, and to keep a safe distance, as seals are easily disturbed when on land. The mammals spend nearly a third of their lives on land, coming ashore on a daily basis to rest, escape predators, give birth, or to bask in the sun.
It is advised that anyone who spots a seal that has come ashore and is injured, or being harassed, to contact a local DFO detachment. The Bay Roberts location can be reached at (709) 786-3960.
After spending some time in the spotlight, the seal on Carbonear’s wharf eventually found his way back to the water.
