The second of two men charged with breaking into a bank with the use of heavy equipment has been released from custody on bail.
Cory Quilty, 41, was freed after a bail hearing Wednesday morning and will make his next court appearance Feb. 28, the same date as Jamie Kennedy, 40. Kennedy was released on bail Monday.
The men, who are both from Paradise, are facing a number of charges related to a break-in at the BMO Bank of Montreal branch on Newfoundland Drive Saturday morning.
The bank's alarm sounded around 4:30 a.m. and RNC officers arrived to find a front-end loader in the parking lot and a hole smashed in the side of the building where the drive-through ATM was located.
Not long afterward, Quilty and Kennedy were arrested during a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway.
Quilty is charged with breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and other firearms offences.
Kennedy is charged with breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, public mischief, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm and more firearms offences.
The break-in was the fourth in a series of similar incidents in the metro area in a week, but police have not said they are linked. Heavy equipment — including a backhoe and an excavator — were used to smash into the TD Bank branch on Elizabeth Avenue, Sobeys on Kelsey Drive and Scotiabank on the main highway in C.B.S.
