A serious vehicle rollover on Pitts Memorial Drive sent one man to hospital, destroyed a section of guardrail and left a trail of debris and vehicle contents on a stretch of the highway early Wednesday morning.

The car was left lying on its side with the lone male driver trapped inside until St. John’s Regional fire department firefighters used extrication tools to cut away the roof of the battered Mazda car.

The crash happened in the westbound lane at the overpass for Bay Bulls Road just after 2:30 a.m. causing the lanes in both directions to be closed and traffic to be diverted away from the collision scene.

No information was available as to the nature of the man’s injuries but he was conscious and communicating with first responders on scene.
