Serious two-vehicle collision with moose on TCH sends four to hospital

Four people were injured Thursday night including one woman who had to be cut out of the car she was in following a serious two-vehicle collision with a moose.

A paramedic treats three people injured in a moose-vehicle collision Thursday night on the TCH.

The collision happened just after 10 p.m. in the westbound lane of the Trans-Canada highway near the Soldier’s Pond electrical station when one of the cars struck a moose and was then apparently struck by a second car. The second car then veered off the road and went over an embankment into some trees about a hundred meters down the highway. The female driver was not seriously injured but a dog, a black Labrador retriever, riding in that car escaped and hadn’t been found when the Telegram left the scene. Three of the four people in the first car that hit the moose were able to get out of their demolished vehicle but a woman remained trapped in the wreck until firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department used extrication tools to cut away parts of twisted metal to free her. Traffic was stopped for about an hour while rescue personnel dealt with the incident. An official on scene said the injuries to the four people did not appear life-threatening but all of them were taken to hospital for treatment.
