There were no injuries to people, but several beagles perished in a fire in St. John’s Thursday night.

Platoon chief Paul Chaytor of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department said they received the call about the fire at 9 p.m. and when they arrived on scene at 709 Empire Avenue, there was heavy smoke and fire showing at the rear of the home.

Firefighters made entry into the two-unit dwelling to make sure no one was inside as others hosed down the flames.

Chaytor said the rear of the home suffered extensive damage, but no cause had been determined.

One woman has been displaced and is being assisted by the Red Cross with emergency lodging.

A section of Empire Avenue was shut down by police as firefighters battled the blaze.

The incident is under investigation.
