Effective Tuesday, June 30, the City of St. John’s is bringing back its sewer backup service for residents.

The service was temporarily halted due to concerns around COVID-19.

In a news release, the city said it consulted with provincial agencies, and sewer backups can now be cleared “while maintaining the ability to protect the health and safety of our employees and residents requesting this service during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In late April and early May, The Telegram told stories of several St. John’s residents who paid big bills to private plumbing companies to clear blocked sewer laterals — the underground pipes outside homes connecting to the sewer main — during the COVID-19 pandemic because the city had suspended services.
