A sex offender who was the subject of a public warning from police last year is reportedly back in custody with new charges.

Dennis Peter Murphy has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle and five charges of breaching court orders.

Murphy has already made a brief appearance in provincial court on the charges and is scheduled to be back in the courtroom by video from the lockup Wednesday for a bail hearing.

Murphy, 60, was released from Dochester Penitentiary in June 2019 after serving a sentence for sex crimes against young females. The RNC issued a public notice at that time, saying it had reasonable grounds to fear Murphy would commit another violent sexual offence.

Police described Murphy’s behaviour as predatory and noted his convictions involved sex offences against females to whom he had supplied drugs and alcohol. Some of them were under age 18, police said.

Murphy was released from prison with strict conditions, including that he abide by a curfew, not possess any weapon or sharp object, not consume alcohol or drugs not prescribed to him by a doctor, not enter any home where a child lives unless in the presence of their guardian, stay 100 metres away from any public park, pool, school grounds, daycare or community centre, and not enter into a romantic relationship or cohabitation with someone who is a parent or cares for a child, among others.

Murphy breached one of his conditions by failing to report to police within 48 hours of his release from jail. He was arrested and charged soon thereafter, then released to await his next court date.
