Shearstown man dies in single-vehicle collision near Whitbourne

WHITBOURNE, N.L. — The community of Shearstown is mourning the death of a 54-year-old resident this morning.

The man was killed in a single-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Whitbourne on Thursday afternoon. 

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says the man's vehicle crossed over the centre line and came to rest in a ditch on the opposite side of the road with the driver, its sole occupant, trapped inside. 

He was removed by firefighters and transported by ambulance to the Dr. Wm H Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne, where he was pronounced deceased.

An RCMP collision analyst with attended the scene and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged.  

The investigation is continuing.
