The sexual assault trial of RNC Const. Doug Snelgrove was due to start in St. John’s Wednesday morning but has been postponed until 2 p.m., as sheriffs take to the street to find 40 new potential jurors.
Having been selected for the jury on Tuesday, two jurors and one alternate juror asked the judge for dismissals when court began Tuesday morning. Their reasons are unknown.
Sheriffs are now tasked with finding 40 new people to summon for jury duty in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court’s alternate venue for the trial, the School for the Deaf. The selection process for the replacement jurors will take place this afternoon.
Once the jurors are in place, Justice Garrett Handrigan will deliver his preliminary instructions to them before Crown and defence lawyers make their opening statements.
Snelgrove, 43, is charged with sexually assaulting a woman while he was on duty in St. John’s in 2015.
