St. John’s Regional fire department acting platoon chief Tony Renouf told The Telegram that the man was injured at about 8 p.m. on the upper deck of one of the company’s container ships. Complicating matters were snow-covered and slippery decks and stairs left over from Tuesday’s storm. The victim had to be secured in a rescue basket and placed vertically in a small ship's elevator to be lowered to a waiting ambulance on a lower vehicle deck.
Renouf said it took about thirty minutes to get the victim from the upper deck to the ambulance.
The man’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
