TERRA NOVA, N.L. — Police weren’t laughing when they saw a recent picture on social media.
The Cape Shore Memes post, which featured a photo of a driver behind the wheel of a vehicle while holding an open beer bottle, landed a 19-year-old Terra Nova man in some trouble with the law.
According to a RCMP news release issued on Tuesday, March 19, Glovertown RCMP were notified of the post on Feb. 11.
The picture was believed to have been taken in the Terra Nova area, the release stated.
After conducting an investigation and identifying the man as the driver in the picture, police charged him under the Liquor Control Act for having open alcohol in a vehicle and under the Highway Traffic Act for using a hand-held cellular device while driving.
The man did not deny his involvement when questioned by police and both charges have since been processed as convictions, the release notes.
“RCMP NL cautions the public that content matter circulating over social media can and will be investigated when illegal activity exists,” the release states.
