The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has issued notice of delayed opening of 39 schools this week — the start of the 2018-19 school year.

The majority of schools will open on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

However, teachers will have two days of professional development in some schools, leaving the opening to Friday, Sept. 7.

The training is related to the start of changes under the province’s new Education Action Plan.

The plan was released in mid-July and came out of recommendations from the Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes. It sets out specific actions to improve the school system, to be taken in the short-, medium- and long-term, to 2022.

The schools with the delayed opening for teacher training were listed on the district website.

They are: St. Catherine’s Academy, Holy Family Elementary (Chapel Arm), St. John Bosco, St. Andrew's Elementary, Upper Gullies Elementary, Carbonear Academy, Mary Queen of the World Elementary, St. Teresa's School, Elizabeth Park Elementary, Holy Trinity Elementary, St. Mark's School, Point Leamington Academy, Lakeside Academy, Holy Name of Mary Academy, Christ the King School, William Mercer Academy, Fogo Island Central Academy, Glovertown Academy, New World Island Academy, Anthony Paddon Elementary, Woodland Primary, Gander Academy, Riverside Elementary, Hampden Academy, Grandy's River Academy, Burgeo Academy, Jakeman All Grade, Cloud River Academy, Our Lady of Mercy Elementary, Copper Ridge Academy, Templeton Academy, Stephenville Primary, C.C.
