SPANIARD'S BAY, N.L. — Spaniard's Bay town council is considering a proposal that would look to give some new life to a municipal park in the community.
At the May 27 council meeting, a motion was supported to hire local business O'Neill's Landscape to prepare a design for what would be phase one of a multi-phase project to revitalize the Ryan's Brook Mini Park. The motion was presented by Deputy Mayor Darlene Stamp on behalf of the town's tourism committee.
"Right now over there, it's starting to get a little bit dilapidated again," the deputy mayor told The Compass. "We're looking at trying to create a place for the community, a place for the children to go swimming, family picnics and that kind of stuff."
In addition to adding a swimming area, lookout and space for picnics, Stamp would eventually like to see the area linked up to a trail system the town is still in the early stages of trying to set up. The town has met with the East Coast Trail Association in the past on that matter.
The hope would be to do this work in phases. Stamp indicated the town would likely need to apply for grants in order to get the ball rolling on some of that. Stamp expects this will take years to see through.
"It's all part of the town and tourism and trying to make the town a family place," she said.
According to Stamp, O'Neill's has come back to the town with a redesign concept for the park area.
Council has yet to hold a vote on proceeding with the project.
The next Spaniard's Bay council meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 22.
