ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Two brothers facing serious charges related to the beating of another man on Cookstown Road in St. John’s this week were back in provincial court Friday.

William Ryan, 48, and Anthony Ryan, 46, wore prison-issue clothing as sheriffs escorted them into the courtroom in handcuffs and shackles. They had been scheduled for a bail hearing but their proceedings lasted only about a minute, with the judge postponing the matter until Monday.

The victim of the alleged attack, a 47-year-old man whom police say was known to the brothers, remains in hospital in critical condition.

The Ryan brothers are both charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon — namely a golf club. Court documents indicate they live together on Cookstown Road, in the centre of the city.

Forensic investigators with the RNC were seen collecting pieces of a broken golf club from the pavement on the road early Wednesday morning.

Police officers had reportedly been en route to a call when they noticed a disturbance in the street shortly after midnight. Paramedics treated the injured man on site before taking him to hospital in an ambulance, and police took the Ryan brothers into custody.
