The City of St. John’s will be discontinuing parking enforcement services for privately-owned parking lots through the city, it was announced on Monday.

Owners of private lots who had enforcement agreements with the city have been advised in writing of the change, according to a news release from the city.

A statement from council says the city decided to do this because there are private businesses in the city that provide parking monitoring services and the city does not wish to compete with private business. Also, the costs of enforcement have increased, the statement said, and it is no longer cost effective to offer the service.

The city will prosecute tickets issued prior to the termination of the parking lot agreements.

The council statement says this change will allow the city to “more effectively utilize its resources in the enforcement of its regulations related to public parking areas.”
