ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — On Friday, proponents for the Anglican Cathedral annex asked council to defer the decision originally scheduled for Monday evening’s regular meeting of council.

Applicants asked to defer the decision to meet with city staff to further review the proposed design.

After the Monday council meeting, Mayor Danny Breen said he met with the applicants on Friday.

He said they wanted more time to meet with city staff about the design, taking into consideration comments made at the public information session on July 25.

“They want to talk to our staff about changes they can make to the design and what changes maybe were suggested, why they may or may not work, so they wanted to have some time to do that before it came back to council for a vote.”

Breen said he expects the decision could come back before council by its next meeting on Aug. 19.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary and Coun. Hope Jamieson both presented separate but similar notices of motion to council related to heritage buildings or heritage area developments.

O’Leary said that at the next meeting of council she will move a motion to have council consider the following: “Until such time as a new Heritage By-Law has been adopted by council, applications for additions to a designated heritage building (excluding those in residential zones) be brought to council, prior to development approval to allow council to consider whether a public meeting is warranted.”

Jamieson gave a similar notice of motion, though she said her motion does different things than O'Leary's.

“Take notice that at the next regular meeting of St. John’s city council I will bring forward a motion to defer all new development applications in the proposed heritage area four pending the adoption of the heritage by-law," Jamieson said.
