A trek to the Sobeys supermarket on Ropewalk Lane to pick up a few grocery items for a macaroni and cheese supper turned out to be a $675,000 windfall for a St. John’s couple.
On Jan. 16, Evelyn Byrne and Jim Dyke bought the ticket that would turn them into the province’s latest Set For Life winners.
Dyke had picked up his groceries and popped into the Griffin’s Smoke Shop that day and purchased one Set For Life ticket.
As Byrne was cooking supper back home, Dyke scratched his ticket and the Game 2 board, revealing three “Set For Life” symbols. Upon discovering their win, he said he sealed it with a kiss. Evelyn began doing her happy dance in the kitchen with box of macaroni in hand.
After receiving their cheque at the Atlantic Lottery NL headquarters Thursday morning, the couple said they plan to pay some bills, do some renovations around their home, tour Newfoundland this coming summer and purchase a brand new SUV.
They chose the lump sum option of $675,000 over the $1,000 a week for 25 years.
