The lawyer representing the St. John's Dockyard was in court briefly Wednesday morning to answer to charges stemming from an incident on the MV Beaumont Hamel ferry in December 2016.

The dockyard is facing nine charges under the province's Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with an incident in which a worker was overcome and rendered unresponsive by paint fumes. He was painting inside a ballast tank while the ferry was in dry dock.

Six people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The charges include allegations that the dockyard failed to provide and maintain a safe workplace, failed to ensure that necessary clothing and devices were used, failed to ensure that respiratory protection equipment was provided, failed to ensure appropriate tests for harmful fumes were made and recorded, and failed to make sure rescue workers had immediate access to a breathing apparatus, among others.

Defence lawyer Ashley Savinov told the court she needed time to review the disclosure in the case. The matter will be called again July 5.
