The Cabot Square Dominion supermarket on Stavanger Drive in St. John's is temporarily closed, since a staff member who last worked two weeks ago has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The person last worked in the store on March 20, a spokesman for Loblaws told The Telegram Thursday afternoon.

"We are reaching out to local public health officials and are taking a number of steps to minimize risk, including increased sanitization protocols and enforcing social distancing practices in the store," Mark Boudreau said in an e-mail.

Boudreau said the store is closed for a thorough cleaning and is expected to reopen Friday.

"We want to assure our customers and employees that we take their safety very seriously," he said.

The store has implemented a number of protective measures since the COVID-19 outbreak began, including establishing one-way aisles, designated entrance and exit doors, and the provision of sanitized carts. Cashiers have been provided with plexiglass screens and there are markings on the floor at the checkouts at six-foot increments, indicating where customers should wait to allow for social distancing.

It's the second time this week a St. John's supermarket has closed for sanitization after a staff member tested positive for the coronavirus. The Sobeys store on Topsail Road closed temporarily on Monday after a pharmacy employee received a postive test result. The person, who last worked March 26, is now in isolation.
