ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The City of St. John’s has once again launched its Residential Re-Leaf program for capital city homeowners, who can apply for a $150 voucher toward the purchase of a tree to plant on their property.
The Residential Re-Leaf program aims to enhance the streetscape and increase the presence of trees in these areas by encouraging property owners to plant trees on their property. Residents wishing to participate in the program can apply in person, through regular mail, by email or online. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis and must be received by May 17.
Applicants will be responsible for attending a tree care information session with the city’s municipal arbourist to learn about planting and maintaining the tree on their property.
At Monday’s regular city council meeting, Coun. Ian Froude explained some benefits of the program.
“The reason we have this program is trees make our streets safer – they slow down traffic, they soak up a ton of storm water and rainfall, they make us happier and bring us outside, and pull in a ton of greenhouse gas emissions.”
There was a similar program in 2016.
