St. John’s council voted Monday evening in favour of changes to an early-morning winter parking ban on sections of Water Street and Duckworth Street.

The ban – designed to improve snowclearing in the downtown core – will begin Jan. 2 and end March 31.

It will be in effect from 4-6 a.m. every day, and those in violation of the ban will be ticketed or towed, depending on whether the streets need to be plowed.

Anyone parked in the affected areas will face a minimum $55 parking ticket.

People needing to park downtown between 4 and 6 a.m. can park on Harbour Drive or in parking garages located next to city hall, at 351 Water St., or at 330 Duckworth St.

Last year, the ban was in effect between the hours of 3:30 and 6:30 a.m. and cars parked in the affected areas were towed regardless of whether the streets needed to be plowed.

This year’s changes to the ban were the result of engagement sessions with stakeholders.
